YES!! UpCircle has finally landed with us 💚
.
.
UpCircle are a UK skincare brand trying to do everything right. From organic and natural ingredients which are cruelty free, palm oil free and vegan, to sustainable glass and aluminium tubes and containers with everything being 100% recyclable. Everything is handmade right here in the UK and they even use repurposed ingredients which would otherwise have gone to landfill...
.
.
⭐️ON A MISSION TO FIGHT WASTE⭐️
So what do they do to tackle this? They go around their London coffee shops collecting arabica coffee grounds and repurpose them into their face and body scrubs and the coffee oil into their facial serums. They repurpose olive stones from the olive oil industry and use the rejuvenating powder in their face masks. They crush argan shells which are a by product of the argan oil industry and pack the vitamin E rich powder into their face moisturisers
.
.
I kid you not, we already have a couple of out of stocks. We haven’t tried their products yet but I literally CANNOT wait time try a couple of facial products- I need to get my skin summer ready and glowing again! .
.
If you like the sound of their mission? Check them out at FRIENDLYTURTLE.COM today 😊

Let talk about fast fashion for a minute 🙋🏼‍♀️
.
.
In our most recent blog post, we touch points on everything from the big brands causing all the upset, the environmental impacts of the industry, and the inhuman working conditions and the exploitation of workers rights
.
.
More and more of us are becoming aware that the low price of our new cloths must come at the expense of something- how else would our high street fashion chains be able to pump out these products for so cheap. In a bid to keep their costs low, they turn a blind eye to the poor conditions and the basic hum rights that are ripped away from their workers
.
.
Did you know that workers in Bangladesh earn an average of £52 PER MONTH? And this is at the most optimistic level. The reality is, woman and child workers are paid far less, with woman being sacked during pregnancy, abused by male members of staff, and expected to work ridiculous hours all so that these brands can get their newest fashion lines out to us and generate huge profits. The fashion industry spends over $500 billion EVERY YEAR to lead us to believe we need to stay ‘in fashion’. That’s quite the marketing campaign
.
.
Not including the environmental impacts of the process. Toxic dyes pumped into water ways and into our oceans. 700 gallons to produce one T-shirt and 200 gallons for a pair of jeans. That’s about 8 cups of water every day for 10 years. With the industry making up 10% of human global emissions, they give the travel industry a solid run for their money
.
.
Want to learn how to can reduce your impacts? Check out our most recent post over on our eco blog 💚

REFLECTING ON MY TIME IN ISOLATION
.
It was hard, wasn’t it? If you’re anything like me, I thrive in big open spaces. Having to stay indoors for all but essential shopping and a short period of exercise for 8 weeks was really tough. As I know it was for most of you. There was actually one very important realisation from the whole experience though which I am actually really fortunate for...
.
.
This time helped me get back to the mission of Friendly Turtle. I started this eco shop to help raise awareness, and although we do a lot of that through our products, I think sometimes the best way to help raise awareness of everything ethical and environmental is through writing. Specifically for me...writing blog posts. I love to write. I always have, so I’ve been doing a lot more blogging recently (you may have noticed). And I don’t plan to stop. To help us achieve our mission of raising awareness, I actually think the products should come second to the education. Why would someone switch to a sustainable product if they don’t understand its purpose? Sustainable living is so much more than buying a reusable coffee cup. It really is a lifestyle & a journey of awareness since there are so many factors in our lives that determine both how ethical and sustainable we are, without really even being aware of them
.
Just as a quick example of this which I read about recently would be the banning of battery caged hens and their eggs. As a nation, we expressed we wouldn’t stand for such awful conditions for the hens, and in 2012 this was finally outlawed. Yet of the 20% of all eggs that go into the manufacturing industry, most of these are actually from caged hens. The difference? We don’t see it or hear about. The only way we can change something like this is through raising awareness and that is exactly what we plan to do
.
Yes we sell hundreds of eco friendly and ethical products, and so many of you love them. But we also want to focus on raising awareness on any other issues that we believe can improve the world we live in. So- there will be a lot more blog posts and a lot more writing going forward. And we hope you will all help us by sharing & spreading the awareness 💚

QUESTION: WHAT IS ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE BANKING?
.
.
There’s more people than ever trying to change the way they shop. We’re all striving to live more sustainably. We make those simple eco swaps that allow us to reduce waste. And we choose to support brands and businesses that demonstrate responsibilities and initiatives to reduce their own impacts on our environment
.
.
BUT HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE STOPPED TO THINK ABOUT OUR BANK? .
.
Did you know only 75% of us in the UK have ever switched banks? We’re putting this down to a lack of awareness. Because if you knew what your bank does with your money, the chances are, you probably wouldn’t choose to stick around and support their causes!
.
.
From investing your money in arms dealing and military equipment in conflict zones across the world, tax avoidance schemes, to investing in fracking and fossil fuels. These are just some of the things our high street banks are using your money for
.
.
So, in order to live a sustainable lifestyle we think it’s time to start addressing the issues with these banks. How do we do that? We simply move to a bank that supports green initiatives and ethical policies. We want to see that figure reversed, and see 75% of us in the uk SWITCHING bank accounts. That would be music to our ears!
.

Soooo many new arrivals due in next week- we’ll start announcing the new brands real soon- promise!
.
.
But backtracking to this week, we had some lovely new bits arrive from Black & Blum, and this time we went with some BRIGHT colours and fancy glass water bottles .
.
⭐️WHY WE LOVE THEM⭐️
.
First, we love that it’s glass. Water just tastes better out of glass. Plus, the thread for the lid is on the inside of the bottle neck so it’s super easy to drink from and looks awesome
.
Secondly, it’s wrapped in silicone to protect it from those inevitable bumps and falls. It’s also got a silicone seal inside the metal lid which makes it leakproof
.
Thirdly, WE HAVE NEVER unscrewed a lid from a bottle with such ease, delight and satisfaction. Honestly, these guys have absolutely nailed what a quality designed bottle should be
.
And lastly, it has a tough and durable nylon loop ring attached to the bottle so it’s easy to carry, even with my little finger
.
Oh, and did we mention that it’s seriously lightweight. Definitely not what we were expecting when we first received them!
.
.
Ok, so you can probably tell that we are all loving these new glass water bottles here, with colours to suit every mood. And only £19.95, they’re not a bad price either. Now you just have to decide which one you’re going to go for 💚
